  • Library Journal Reviews : LJ Reviews 2005 April #1
These excellent books provide valuable information for parents, professionals, and educators working with children and adults who have Asperger syndrome (AS). A milder form of Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD), AS often matches higher intelligence with difficulty in social interaction. The revised edition of the OASIS Guide-written by parents of children with AS and creators of the OASIS web site (www.aspergersyndrome.com)-focuses on issues related to children at home, in social settings, and at school, including an expanded section on special education basics; the first edition's features are maintained, e.g., narratives, sidebars, and useful charts. One of the best books available on AS (the original edition was included in "Sending Postcards from the Airport: Autism/Asperger's Syndrome," the collection development article on ASD in LJ 7/03), this is highly recommended for all public libraries and for academic libraries with comprehensive ASD collections.Children, Youth and Adults, meanwhile, approaches AS from an academic perspective. Stoddart (director of clinical & professional services, Aspergers Soc. of Ontario) and his Canadian colleagues include sections on employment, sexuality, and Asperger culture, as well as a narrative by Donna Moon, who did not discover her connection with AS until her first year in college. Coverage of adult issues is more effective here than in OASIS. Strongly recommended for all academic libraries and public libraries with comprehensive ASD collections.-Corey Seeman, Univ. of Toledo Libs., OH Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
  • PW Annex Reviews : Publishers Weekly Annex Reviews
When Bashe, a certified special education teacher, and Kirby, founder and moderator of OASIS (a popular Asperger Syndrome Web site with support message boards), published the previous edition of this book in 2001, parents of children with the pervasive development disorder flocked to it. The authors now offer this updated edition of the definitive resource, explaining what is currently known about the nature of Asperger Syndrome from the viewpoint of doctors and families. In understandable language, Bashe and Kirby provide instructions for parents on how to gain access to information, support and treatment for their child, covering the most up-to-date options available as well as advice on new medications and special education. Later, they look at aspects of the "whole child," offering suggestions for parents on helping their son or daughter manage their social and emotional worlds, life at school and general growing-up issues. Bashe and Kirby acknowledge that every AS child is different, but with the help of numerous anecdotes from parents of AS children, they manage to provide a wide-ranging, indispensable guide.
