The breadwinner Cover Image Book Book

The breadwinner / Deborah Ellis.

Summary:

Eleven-year-old Parvana lives with her family in one room of a bombed-out apartment building in Kabul, Afghanistan's capital city. Parvana's father was arrested for the crime of having a foreign education, and the family is left without someone who can earn money or even shop for food. As conditions for the family grow desparate, only one solution emerges. Forbidden to earn money as a girl, Parvana must transform herself into a boy, and become the breadwinner.
"Deborah Ellis' novel The Breadwinner is set in Kabul, Afghanistan and tells the story of a family living under the harsh regime of the Taliban militia. Through her characters, Ellis reveals the courage of ordinary people living through the horror of war and the importance of relationships to sustain people's humanity. The novel is informative, historically accurate and suitable for adult readers. Although not an easy read at times due to the subject matter, it is well written and compelling." – May 2010 Exemplary Literacy Materials Online Reviews.
