Separation from children after a divorce may be rendered less painful for all concerned (including grandparents) if some of the level-headed advice given here is followed. Family therapist Cohen ( Joint Custody and Co-Par ent ing ) is conversant with the difficulties of parenting after divorce through her practice, and in her own experience as the divorced, remarried parent of a child who, at 14, chose to live with his father in another state. The author examines successful approaches to maintaining relationships including her own with her present husband's child whose mother lives in another state. Responses of children and parents to the hardships of staying close from far away are included. On the premise that ``any relationship is better than none,'' Cohen offers guidance to long-distance parents that is compassionate and practical, no matter the age of the child. (Sept.)
